Chinese social media app RedNote, known as Xiaohongshu in China, gained nearly 3 million U.S. users in a single day this week, according to Similarweb (NYSE:SMWB). The app's daily active users in the United States skyrocketed to 3.4 million on Monday, up from fewer than 700,000 the previous day and approximately 300,000 a week earlier.
This surge comes as U.S. TikTok users, facing a looming nationwide ban due to security concerns, seek alternatives. With 170 million Americans using TikTok, many have joined RedNote as "TikTok Refugees." The platform’s dramatic rise has also propelled it to the top of U.S. app store download charts.
The shift to RedNote has outpaced the growth of ByteDance's Lemon8, another TikTok-related app. Lemon8 saw a modest increase in U.S. daily active users, reaching 1.7 million on Monday, up from 1.1 million in recent weeks. Meanwhile, TikTok's daily active users in the U.S. fell by 2.1% week over week, dropping to 82.2 million, according to Similarweb.
On RedNote, Chinese users welcomed the influx of Americans, answering questions about Chinese culture, food, and travel. However, some U.S. users have tested the app’s censorship boundaries. China’s strict digital controls, including its "Great Firewall," block foreign platforms like Instagram and X.
For months, TikTok users had hoped to avoid the ban enacted in 2023, but as the January 19 deadline nears, many are preparing for the inevitable. The app’s uncertain future has sparked a migration to platforms like RedNote, reshaping the U.S. social media landscape.
