“Riverdale,” the latest teen drama by The CW, seems to be shrouded in eternal mystery that fans could not help wondering where the story of the TV adaptation of the beloved comics would go now. However, recent comments by its stars suggest that the story of Archie Andrews, his friends, and the fictional town of Riverdale are a far depiction from the characters we knew in the comics.
Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead Jones in the series, teased that Season 2 will get more “darker” and “stranger.” He shared to TVLine, “We’re going to be leaning into a lot of those qualities that a lot of people ended up loving in the first couple of episodes — this heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy, but it’s taken very seriously.”
KJ Apa, who plays Archie Andrews, seems to agree, and added that this direction would have been more emphasized if the producers initially agreed to show the Season 1 alternate ending, where it involves his character, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), and the tragic shooting at the diner where it left Archie’s father wounded.
Apa said the alternate ending will definitely usher in a more serious Archie, alluding to "his Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne moment" that would lead him to seek revenge, the Mirror said. He added, "I'm really excited to explore a different side of Archie that we haven't really seen yet, a darker side after Fred gets shot. It kinda shakes things up for him for sure. Things start to get pretty gnarly."
Season 2 of “Riverdale” will premiere on The CW in the fall.
