Russia unleashed one of its largest attacks on Ukraine in recent months, firing approximately 430 drones and 68 missiles across multiple regions on Saturday, killing six people and wounding at least 18 others. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted the majority of the projectiles, but the damage was still widespread and devastating.
The heaviest toll was recorded in the Kyiv region, where five people lost their lives as Russian forces deliberately struck energy infrastructure alongside residential neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attacks and reported that the regions of Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv were also targeted. A separate Russian guided bomb strike later hit a residential area in Zaporizhzhia, claiming one additional life and injuring three more civilians.
Ukraine's Energy Ministry reported that consumers across six regions were left without electricity following the overnight assault, continuing Russia's systematic campaign to deprive Ukrainian cities of power and heat during the winter months. The strategy appears designed to erode civilian morale as Russian ground forces push forward on the eastern front and pressure Kyiv to surrender additional territory.
Zelenskyy warned that Russia is attempting to exploit the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to escalate destruction in Ukraine, urging allied nations to ramp up air-defense weapons production. Inventories have been strained as the United States and Gulf allies redirect resources to counter Iranian strikes in the region.
The large-scale attack prompted NATO member Poland to scramble fighter jets as a precautionary measure, though no airspace violations were confirmed. Moldova also reported a Russian drone entering its territory, condemning the incursion as a direct threat to regional security.
Residents left amid the rubble expressed exhaustion and grief, with many saying they see no end to Russia's relentless aggression against civilian life.
