Russia launched a fresh missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, early Wednesday, sparking fires and leaving at least two people injured, according to city officials. The latest strike underscores the continued intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war as missile and drone attacks remain a persistent threat across the country.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the missile attack caused fires in two separate districts located on opposite sides of the Dnipro River. One blaze broke out in a storage facility, while another damaged a non-residential building. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to contain the fires and assess the extent of the destruction.
Klitschko confirmed that two people were injured in the attack. One of the victims required hospitalization, while the other received medical attention for less severe injuries. Authorities have not yet released further details on the victims or the overall level of property damage.
Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv as the missile threat unfolded, with the air alert remaining in effect for approximately one hour. Residents sought shelter during the warning as Ukraine's air defense systems responded to the incoming threat.
The attack on Kyiv followed another Russian missile strike targeting the southern Black Sea port city of Odesa earlier in the evening. Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said the strike injured 10 people, highlighting the continued danger facing civilians in multiple regions of Ukraine.
According to Kiper, eight of the injured victims were admitted to hospitals for treatment, while the remaining two received medical care for less serious injuries. Officials are continuing to assess the damage caused by the attack.
The latest strikes come as Russia continues its campaign of missile attacks against Ukrainian cities, targeting critical infrastructure and urban areas. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly urged residents to respond immediately to air raid alerts as the conflict continues with no sign of easing, while emergency services remain on high alert to respond to further attacks.
