Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, discussing preparations for a new round of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, according to a statement by the Russian foreign ministry.
The ministry confirmed that Lavrov briefed Rubio on the implementation of agreements made during a recent phone call between the Russian and U.S. presidents. Lavrov also mentioned that Moscow is preparing detailed proposals aimed at advancing negotiations with Kyiv. The proposed talks are scheduled to take place in Istanbul on June 2, with the goal of achieving a sustainable peace settlement.
This diplomatic engagement signals ongoing efforts to revive dialogue amid escalating tensions on the battlefield. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s commitment to continuing the negotiation process, highlighting Istanbul as a neutral venue with a history of hosting previous Ukraine-Russia discussions.
In a separate statement released via Telegram, the Russian foreign ministry noted that Lavrov also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The two diplomats exchanged views on international efforts to resolve the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Turkey has played a key mediating role in previous negotiations and continues to support diplomatic channels.
As global focus intensifies on the Ukraine crisis, the proposed June 2 Istanbul talks may represent a pivotal moment in the pursuit of a negotiated peace. However, the outcome remains uncertain amid deeply entrenched positions on both sides. Observers will be watching closely for developments from the Russian delegation’s forthcoming proposals and the international response.
