A large-scale Russian attack struck Kyiv in the early hours of June 2, leaving at least four people injured and causing significant damage to residential buildings across the Ukrainian capital, according to local officials and eyewitness accounts.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a suspected missile strike hit a 24-story apartment building, leading to a partial collapse. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene amid concerns that residents could be trapped beneath the rubble. Preliminary reports indicated that at least four people sustained injuries during the attack.
The assault triggered multiple fires across the city. In Kyiv’s Podil district, a blaze erupted on the grounds of a non-residential facility, while another fire broke out on the roof of a nine-story apartment building after debris from intercepted missiles reportedly fell onto the structure. Additional fires were reported in the Obolon district, where several vehicles caught fire following the impact of missile debris. Authorities also confirmed fires in open areas, including a location near a kindergarten.
As air raid sirens sounded throughout the capital, thousands of residents sought safety in metro stations and designated bomb shelters. The attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned citizens about intelligence reports indicating the possibility of a major Russian strike. In a nightly address, Zelensky said Ukrainian defense forces remained on high alert and prepared to respond to potential attacks.
The latest strike follows Russia’s recent warning that it would carry out systematic attacks against Ukrainian military-related facilities and decision-making centers in Kyiv. Moscow said the planned operations were retaliation for a drone attack in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region that killed 21 people, an incident Ukraine has denied involvement in.
Elsewhere, Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region also came under overnight shelling. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said at least six people, including an 11-year-old girl, were wounded during the attacks.
The Russia-Ukraine war continues into its fifth year, with both sides intensifying military operations while diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire remain stalled.
