The brief synopsis for “Friday’s Knights” posted on TV Guide reads, “Mortal enemies come together in order to keep all hell from literally breaking loose.”
It seems that Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) will have to join forces with enemies in order to prevent hell and defeat evil. In the preceding episode, titled "The Man Who Was Thursday," Mary successfully got Sebastian (Joe Doyle) on her side after the two slept together. Mary and Sebastian plotted on how to take down the devil (Oliver Bell).
According to the recap of episode 7 posted on Yahoo! News, Sebastian eventually tricked the devil to go into the woods to kill the Essex witches but he was actually planning to kill Lucifer with Mary.
The rest of the Essex witches decided to sacrifice their lives to give their powers to Mary to help defeat her evil son. Mary proceeded to kill off the devil but a woman is seen taking his body in a bag together with his torn limbs and running off. It is unknown at this point whether the devil is truly dead or if there is a chance at resurrection.
The promo for the incoming episode featured Mary joining together with John Alden (Shane West), Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel), Isaac (Iddo Goldberg) and Sebastian to save all of Salem. Mary tells her allies, “Every one of us played our role in this resistance. There still remains a great task.”
Lacy Lawless’ Countess Marburg was also seen rotting in a coffin. It was speculated that her character may return to wreak havoc in episode 8. Meanwhile, Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant) will have to face the consequences of stealing Gloriana’s (Azure Parsons) unborn child.
There seems to be only a handful more episodes to go before the series wraps up its final season. According to Deadline, WGN America no longer wants to commission more seasons for the supernatural drama inspired by the real-life witch trials from the 17th century.
Creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon said, “We knew this would be the third and final season and were able to craft an exciting climax to Mary’s transformational saga.”
WGN America and Tribune Studios’ president and general manager Matt Cherniss expressed his gratitude over the series’ successful run saying, “Salem is a fantastic show that greatly contributed to our successful launch into original programming.”
He added, “We thank Brannon, Adam, our talented cast and our partners at Fox 21, for entrusting us with their unique and remarkable vision for the world of Salem. We also thank the fans for their loyal support of the show.”
‘Salem’ season 3’s episode 8, titled “Friday’s Knights,” is scheduled to air on WGN America on January 11, 2017. It was directed by Nick Copus and written by Adam Simon and Donna Thorland. It will be followed by episode 9, titled "Saturday Morning," scheduled for January 18.
