Samsung reportedly met with suppliers for its foldable phones last month to discuss what they hoped to achieve for the Galaxy Z lineup. And the company said it is expecting Apple to be a competitor in this market in a few years.
The Elec reported that the said meeting between Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division and suppliers took place in the third week of October. During their discussions, the South Korean tech giant is said to have mentioned that Apple could launch its first foldable device in 2024 at the earliest.
This lines up with a previous report based on CCS Insight analysts, who also said Apple could introduce its first-ever device with a foldable display in 2024. Both Samsung and the group of analysts also believe that Apple will prioritize launching a foldable iPad or Mac notebook before introducing a foldable iPhone.
Apple has yet to discuss whether it has plans to join the foldable market in the future. But there have been various reports that the company has been testing various prototypes with different form factors for a foldable iPhone.
It is worth noting that Google is also rumored to introduce a foldable Pixel. Earlier reports suggest Google has been changing its plans for the product, but clues about the foldable Pixel keep appearing in the code of recent Android beta updates.
Before another major tech company joins the foldable space, Samsung MX wants to improve several aspects of its own range of foldable phones. The company reportedly told suppliers that the key areas they want to improve in the next Galaxy Z generations are the foldable phones’ durability and camera.
Samsung is also hoping that suppliers could come up with components that would make its foldable phones lighter and thinner. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs 263 grams with a 6.3mm thickness when unfolded 15.8mm (on the hinge’s side) when folded.
The report also mentioned that Samsung planned for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 to have a built-in S Pen, similar to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It was canceled, however, to avoid making the foldable phone heavier and thicker. But Samsung hopes to make this happen in the future with improved parts from its suppliers.
