Is there something going on between Mellie (Bellamy Young) and Marcus (Cornelius Smith Jr.)? It appears to be so in the latest season of “Scandal,” thanks to a few spoilers shared by the actor.
Talking to TV Line about his character’s progress in the series, he said, ““I was shocked when I first read about their initial spark, where they first kind of suggested it in the script. I was like, ‘Wow! Oh. OK!’ The interesting thing about Shondaland is that a lot of relationships start quickly, but they also stop quickly. You never know if it’s going to last. There’s a natural curiosity about how far it’s going to go — if it goes anywhere at all.”
He also spilled more about this purported romance, which fans will be seeing sooner in the series. After all, it was also a shock to fans that one of Olivia Pope’s (Kerry Washington) gladiators is now holding one of fictional White House’s most powerful positions: that of a press secretary. The second half of the season will also show flashbacks of Marcus and Mellie spending time together, and that people will have to wait if they really had gotten together at one point.
But whatever the outcome is, Smith is confident that “Marcllie” will be a thing at some point. Telling TV Guide, he said, "I think we all saw a spark there. Now, to what degree they go into really understand and engage with that spark, we'll find out. ... I don't think their relationship plays a direct role in how he got to the White House, but I think it affects it on some level."
