The U.S. Senate is preparing for a crucial vote on Thursday as Republicans advance a new healthcare proposal while Democrats push to extend key Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Senate Majority Whip John Thune confirmed the vote, highlighting growing tensions over the fate of COVID-era subsidies that help reduce premium costs for millions of Americans enrolled in Obamacare plans. These subsidies are scheduled to expire at the end of the year, potentially impacting up to 24 million people.
Republican Senators Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Mike Crapo of Idaho introduced an alternative healthcare plan aimed at countering the Democrats’ proposed three-year subsidy extension. According to the GOP lawmakers, their plan would make insurance premiums more affordable by directing up to $1,500 into health savings accounts for individuals earning below 700% of the federal poverty level. However, the funds could not be used for abortion services or gender transition care. The proposal also outlines an expected 11% reduction in insurance premiums by 2027 and includes measures to cut federal Medicaid funding for states that provide healthcare to undocumented immigrants.
Thune emphasized that the Republican plan offers meaningful premium relief, but Democratic leaders sharply disagree. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer denounced the GOP bill as “dead on arrival,” calling it “junk insurance” that fails to meet Americans’ healthcare needs. The Senate will also vote Thursday on the Democrats’ plan to extend ACA subsidies, though it is unlikely to pass without additional Republican backing.
As both parties clash over healthcare affordability and access, the upcoming votes underscore a heated legislative battle with significant implications for millions of Americans relying on ACA coverage.
