Aside from asking if BBC will order the making of “Sherlock” season 5, there is another question fans should be making. Are is main cast members Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will be willing to return to their renovated 221B Baker Street apartment?
The careers of Cumberbatch and Freeman have significantly grown since the series premiered in 2010. Their brilliant portrayal of the characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively, showed their acting prowess landing them one project after another. And their very hectic schedules have become a major consideration in the production of “Sherlock” season 5.
Series co-creator Mark Gatiss previously revealed that getting the cast members together to make season 4 was a “nightmare.” And they are not expecting that the become easier for “Sherlock” season 5.
When asked whether “Sherlock” season 5 is happening, Gatiss told TVLine, “These three [episodes], we're very, very pleased with them. And everybody’s very keen to carry on. It’s just genuinely difficult to schedule everyone’s diaries. It was a nightmare to schedule this season… and that’s not going to go away. I mean, the success of ‘Doctor Strange’ is not going to make Benedict short of work.”
However, fans should not worry so much. It might be difficult to have their schedules match for “Sherlock” season 5 but, at least, Cumberbatch is willing to return to Baker Street. Earlier in 2018, co-showrunner Steven Moffat revealed to RadioTimes that Cumberbatch is “very keen” to reprise his titular role. In fact, Cumberbatch said so himself that he would “love” to return for “Sherlock” season 5. “The idea of never playing [Sherlock] again is really galling,” the actor said in an interview with the Associated Press.
Freeman, on the other hand, was caught in a little controversy when a Telegraph article quoted him saying doing “Sherlock” season 5 is “not fun anymore” because of the highly demanding fanbase. He later complained being taken out context.
Martin explained to Press Association (via Independent.ie) that some aspects of the show’s popularity that are “not always fun” but insisted that it is “a f****** delightful job.” This is a positive indication that fans will be seeing him again as Dr. Watson in “Sherlock” season 5.
