The Xperia brand has been around for quite some time. If you're a phone fan, you'll recall the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, a 2008 Windows Mobile-powered mobile featuring a slideout QWERTY keyboard, a panel interface, and a 3-inch 480 x 800 display. The Xperia PLAY, which was released in 2011, was geared toward game players and featured a slideout gamepad. Sony eventually purchased Ericsson in 2012.
Sony Will Reportedly Discontinue its Xperia Line in 2025
Even after introducing the first smartphone with a 4k resolution display in 2015, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, the Xperia series failed to gain traction in the United States and elsewhere. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai stated in 2018 and again in 2023 that the business will continue to make smartphones despite Sony's inability to produce a profit at the high prices it charges for its devices, per Phone Arena.
Earlier this year, a smartphone market analysis rated Sony 14th out of the top 20 brands, with a market share of.35%. Sony was ranked just ahead of Asus and just below HMD Global, which owns the Nokia brand.
Speaking of names, the Xperia brand may be retired. On Weibo, there has been some talk about Sony taking a scorched Earth approach to its smartphone business by eliminating the Xperia moniker and adopting a new design language.
Sony Expected To Introduce A New Phone Feature in 2025
The front-facing camera is likely to go beneath the display in 2025, two years ahead of Apple's introduction of such a feature. Moving Sony's front-facing camera from the bezel to under the display would undoubtedly transform the design of the company's smartphones and could result in a boost in commerce.
Introducing its first phone with an under-display front-facing camera seemed to be the ideal opportunity for Sony to smash the Xperia name, design, and history into a million pieces and start anew. There's no reason Sony can't produce a smartphone with a terrific mobile screen and spectacular photos -- after all, its IMX image sensors are among the best, and its DSLR cameras are well-recognized -- incredible sound, and more.
It's about time Sony released Xperia phones that live up to the promise of the Xperia X1 and the capability of Sony's consumer electronics division. And hopefully, that period will begin in 2025.
