Early this week, “Star Trek: Discovery” debuted a couple of things for its upcoming series on CBS.
First up was a costumed Jason Isaacs as Captain Gabriel Lorca, who will be leading one of the two ships that will be prominently featured in the show, USS Discover. The first trailer for the show had largely kept Captain Lorca out of the spotlight, as the focus was on the other captain, Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) of the USS Shenzhou, and her relationship to the character played by former “The Walking Dead” star Sonequa Martin-Green.
A new image published by Entertainment Weekly showed Isaacs as a clean-shaven, sharp-looking captain in a navy blue suit sitting at the captain’s chair. Although there hasn’t been much said about Captain Lorca and his role in the series, Screenrant suggested that as an actor who most of his career has been playing bad guy roles, there is a possibly that Isaacs’ character will be an antagonist of sorts in the upcoming series.
Today, a new image from the set of “Star Trek: Discovery” was released. This time, it showed the famous transporter room, where “Star Trek” crew has been beamed in and out from the ship since the franchise first started. But the most noticeable feature shown in the photo was actually the crew’s costumes. Gizmodo observed that the crew this time, specifically Yeoh’s and Martin-Green’s characters, were actually wearing suits with protective armor, a first in the franchise.
James Whitbrook highlights the costume difference:
“Seriously, even when the Federation was at goddamn war in Deep Space Nine did no one at Starfleet ever think that it would be a bright idea to supply protection beyond those woolen (or, in some unfortunate seasons of TNG, spandex) uniforms. Sure, body armor like what’s being worn by Georgiou and Burnham probably wouldn’t stop a phaser blast, but it’s better than nothing. “
“Star Trek: Discovery” is set to debut on CBS September 24.
