Starlink is planning a 2025 launch in South Korea, subject to regulatory approval. The government's recent public notice on amending technical standards is a step toward preventing frequency interference, potentially allowing Starlink to enhance internet access in the country's remote regions.
Starlink Plans South Korea Launch by 2025
By the beginning of 2025, Starlink services may have made their way to South Korea. If the South Korean government takes action to amend its regulations in a way that allows a steady connection to SpaceX's internet services without disrupting the existing providers in the nation, then Starlink will be available there.
South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT allegedly gave a 60-day public notice on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, informing the public about changes to technical standards. By making these adjustments, the government hopes to keep internet consumers' service uninterrupted by avoiding frequency interference.
Starlink will be able to launch in South Korea after the technological specifications are changed, Teslarati reports.
Regulatory Approval Process Underway
Starlink Korea's cross-board supply deal with SpaceX is expected to be approved by the government in about three to four months. Another government agency that needs to go over the supply agreement is the Ministry of Government Legislation.
According to the Korea Post, a local media publication, Starlink services are expected to have modest initial demand. When looking to expand the Starlink market in South Korea, it anticipates that SpaceX would focus on unserved places, including islands, isolated mountain regions, and coastal areas.
South Korea's Internet Leadership
When it comes to national internet infrastructure, South Korea is second to none. Many rules and extensive service use have resulted from the South Korean government's emphasis on high-speed internet.
The nation boasts reputedly one of the world's fastest internet networks, says Statista. A staggering 94% of South Koreans have internet access, suggesting that services are readily available across the nation.
