Author Stephen King‘s “The Mist” is getting a TV adaptation.
An official trailer for the the forthcoming television adaptation was released early this week, along with the details of its premiere date. NME said “The Mist” was created by Christian Torpe, and he said will be based from the 2007 sci-fi horror film version as well as King’s original novella. The premise of the original starts with a strange mist appearing in an American town, causing panic and chaos among its people. Torpe’s version, on the other hand, will have a slight deviation to the original, and will include a new set of characters.
Telling Entertainment Weekly, he said, “I wanted to be respectful to the source material, but my feeling was there was already a great adaptation out there by Frank Darabont [also of “The Walking Dead]. The novella is 200 pages and one location, and we needed to change that to make an ongoing series. But we wanted to remain faithful to the heart of the story.”
In the new series, the deadly mist will affect in several lockdown locations, which include a church and a mall where some townspeople will seek haven against the monsters. The grocery store location will not happen in the new TV adaptation, and the show will also focus on the lives (and controversy surrounding) key characters. Nonetheless, Torpe is confident that “The Mist” series will remain true to King’s story.
He added, “Unfortunately, I thought it was incredibly timely to do a show about what people do when they are blinded by fear. We look around at what’s going on in the world, and everyone is constantly looking for someone to blame, or someone to lead them to the promised land. They find people to hate, either because of their gender or race or faith. Those are elements we tap into — how fear drives things like misogyny and homophobia.”
Starring Alyssa Sutherland, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Bill Carr, Gus Birney, and Luke Cosgrove, “The Mist” will premiere on June 22 on Spike TV, Gamespot said.
