Italian Study Reveals Long-Term Memory Issues in Rodents from Mixing Alcohol and Energy Drinks
A research team at an Italian university investigated the impact of combining energy drinks and alcohol on rodents. The study, published in Neuropharmacology, revealed that this combination can lead to lifelong memory and learning problems, per NDTV.
The trial involved administering energy drinks, alcohol, or a combination of the two to male rodents. Researchers evaluated the rodents' cognitive abilities through brain scans and behavioral tests after consuming the mixed beverages for up to 53 days. The results indicated that the rodents' learning and memory issues persisted after consuming the mixed drinks. Alterations were also observed in the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for these processes.
The researchers observed that the long-term consequences of imbibing these beverages concurrently during adolescence, a critical brain development period, still need to be better understood. They emphasized the potential risks to the mental health of young people that this behavior poses.
Mixing Alcohol and Energy Drinks May Harm Brain's Ability to Learn and Adapt, Study Finds
The study implies that the combination of alcohol and energy beverages may impact the plasticity of the hippocampus, which could impede the brain's capacity to adapt and learn. Initially, the rats exhibited a temporary increase in specific brain functions following consuming the mixed beverages; however, this was followed by a gradual decline.
"Our findings show that drinking alcohol mixed with energy drinks during adolescence leads to changes in the hippocampus at both electrical and molecular levels, which are linked to behavioral changes. These changes are visible during adolescence and continue into adulthood," the researchers stated.
Although additional research on humans is required to verify these findings, the results indicate that the health hazards of energy drinks, particularly when coupled with alcohol, are substantial. It is not recommended to consume both substances in conjunction, as they are both detrimental on their own.
Rats were administered an amount of alcohol that was comparable to that of young adults who engage in excessive drinking, an increasingly prevalent behavior. The potential consequences of this behavior in humans are the subject of the researchers' appeal for additional research.
In summary, the research suggests that the combination of alcohol and energy beverages during adolescence may have long-term effects on hippocampal plasticity beyond the individual effects of each substance.
