On May 18th, “Supernatural” Season 12 went out with a shocking twist in their back-to-back finales when they killed off two major characters.
When Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), Castiel (Misha Collins), and Crowley (Mark A Sheppard) decided to band together to defeat Lucifer, fans did not expect to see some of them dead, Digital Spy reported. In the finale, Crowley chose to sacrifice himself when a complex spell that would trap Lucifer in an alternate reality would require a life to complete it. Grabbing an angel blade, he proceeded to stab himself to keep Lucifer from crossing back to the world the Winchester brothers has been protecting since Season 1.
Castiel, on the other hand, attempted to do the deed himself. He then showed up in the alternate reality where Lucifer was sent to and proceeded to charge at the latter. Just when Castiel thinks he has accomplished his mission and returned back to the original reality, Lucifer managed to come back and mortally planted a blade through Castiel’s back.
Although it wasn’t clear whether Castiel or Crowley or both will be brought back to life, fans could wait for Season 13, which was recently ordered, which includes an animated crossover with Scooby Doo.
Collins, nonetheless, gave some cryptic comments about the season finale to Mashable, of which he said, “In some respects, there's more closure than we typically get — there's some pretty final-seeming repercussions. I'm, as usual, trying to parse my words carefully here. But there's also a new big bad of the show, so there's definitely a To Be Continued component here that's gonna keep people on the edges of their seats for the beginning of Season 13, which is a very large number of seasons.”
