‘Switched at Birth’ season 5’s episode 1, titled “The Call,” is set to feature Bay and Daphne’s lives in China before they eventually return home to Kansas after receiving urgent news.
The synopsis for “The Call” posted on Spoilers Guide reads, “After a transformative 10-month trip to China, Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) return home upon receiving disturbing news. Daphne and Bay are so enthralled with China that they stay longer than anticipated, but after 10 months, they get an emergency call and drop everything to return home.
Once there, Daphne tries to integrate herself back into campus life but finds that things have changed without her. Bay is mixed up about her feelings towards Emmett (Sean Berdy) who is struggling with his own problems. Meanwhile, Kathryn (Lea Thompson) and John (D. W. Moffett) quarrel over her job and Regina (Constance Marie) feels guilty about a secret tryst.”
According to a recap on TV Guide, the final moments of season 4’s last episode showed Bay and Daphne receiving an urgent phone call from their home in the United States. They were prompted to return to Kansas after pursuing new lives in China.
It seems that one of the girls will be revealed to be in danger. This scene will play out in the opening of season 5’s premiere episode. However, creator Lizzy Weiss assured fans that the new crisis will bring Bay and Daphne closer than ever.
Episode 1 will also feature the girls lives in China after deciding to extend their summer adventure trip indefinitely. The two lived in China for months, with Bay working as a tattoo artist and Daphne working in a clinic.
‘Switched at Birth’ season 5’s episode 1, entitled “The Call,” is scheduled to premiere on Freeform on January 31, 2017. It was directed by Allan Arkush and written by Lizzy Weiss. It will be followed by episode 2, titled "This Has to Do with Me," directed by D.W. Moffett.
