With the success of Tom Clancy’s The Division, it was no surprise that Ubisoft would announce that it is working on the sequel. Although details are sparse right now, it’s still likely going to be an open world shooting game. The franchise can hardly justify going back to more linear mechanics now unless they decide to make it something like Rainbow Six Siege.
The announcement was made when developers of the game appeared on the live stream “State of the Game” and said that they have already begun working on the title. Now, this isn’t to say that they are already giving up on the first The Division. In fact, along with the announcement is the release of a new update for the game, Engadget reports.
Along with a few tweaks here and there, the Strawberry update consists of in-game events that players are going to love. For the Xbox One X, an enhancement patch has been sent, and there will apparently be new missions. These will reportedly be of the “legendary” difficulty variety.
With regards to the sequel, the developers also note that what they really want is to be able to tell new stories using their new engine.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Julian Gerighty, the game’s creative director said in the interview. “There are so many stories and so many experiences we want to explore within the Division that we really thought a sequel was the best way to investigate these things.”
As Kotaku notes, the first game in the series launched with a lot of excitement surrounding it, thus helping to boost its sales considerably. Unfortunately, some poor decisions were made after that, which saw many players dropping the game.
The developers have since made amends and tried to earn players’ trust again, which they did to some degree. With the announcement of the sequel, those who stuck around will finally get the expanded story they have been asking for.
