Netflix has confirmed that “The Old Guard” is set to be one of its most-watched original films just a couple of weeks since it premiered worldwide. After garnering millions of views in such a short period, it is not surprising that talks about a sequel have already started among fans.
‘The Old Guard’ slated to hit 72 million views in 4 weeks making a sequel very likely
“The Old Guard” is based on the same title graphic novel by Greg Rucka, who also penned the film’s script. It revolves around a band of warriors who have been around saving lives for several centuries, thanks to their ability to regenerate making them somewhat immortal.
The superhero flick premiered worldwide on July 10, and a week later Netflix announced that the movie is slated to hit 72 million views in its first four weeks in the streaming platform. This means “The Old Guard” is poised to join the top 10 most watch original Netflix films along with other thrillers “Extraction,” “Bird Box,” and “6 Underground.”
THE OLD GUARD is breaking records! The Charlize Theron blockbuster is already among the top 10 most popular Netflix films ever — and Gina Prince-Bythewood is the first Black female director on the list.

It should be noted that Netflix’s methods in tallying movies and shows viewership are different from the traditional TV ratings and box office sales. However, Netflix also does not always announce these kinds of information so publicly and the fact that it did for “The Old Guard” in just a week shows how the company is confident about the movie’s success. This should then be a good reason for Netflix to greenlight a sequel in the near future.
What Charlize Theron and director Gina Prince-Bythewood have said about ‘The Old Guard 2’
Charlize Theron and director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s responses to questions about a sequel should also give fans hope about “The Old Guard 2.” Theron clarified that Netflix has yet to order a sequel, which is not surprising given that it has not even been a month since the first movie came out. But she told Variety, “Let’s have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I’m sure when it’s the right time, we’ll start the conversation.”
Prince-Bythewood has also provided very optimistic words whenever about the prospects of making “The Old Guard 2.” Aside from wanting to helm a second movie, she also confirmed that there are more graphic novel materials to explore to make the movie adaptation into a series. “I know where the story is going, which is pretty great,” the director told Netflix Queue. “It’s up to the audience if they’re interested, if they want to see more. There’s certainly more story to tell.”
“The Old Guard 2” is possibly years away from being produced and released. Fans who are eager to know what happens after that cliffhanger ending should consider picking up Rucka’s graphic novel series. The five-part second book, titled “Force Multiplied,” has just been completed earlier this month.
