President Donald Trump announced a controversial plan to take over the war-torn Gaza Strip, promising economic development after Palestinians are permanently resettled elsewhere. Speaking at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump described Gaza as a “demolition site” and suggested transforming it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Trump’s remarks included a call for Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations to absorb Gazans, a proposal widely rejected by regional leaders. He insisted that U.S. control would bring stability, but did not clarify the legal basis for occupying Gaza. The move contradicts longstanding U.S. policy and has drawn fierce criticism from human rights groups, who argue that forced displacement could constitute a violation of international law.
Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri condemned the plan as an “expulsion,” warning of regional instability. The Saudi government also rejected any attempt to remove Palestinians and reiterated that normalization with Israel is contingent on establishing a Palestinian state.
Despite the uproar, Netanyahu praised Trump’s "fresh thinking," though he refrained from endorsing the specifics. The proposal follows Trump’s recent controversial statements, including discussions on acquiring Greenland and making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
Trump offered no details on how the U.S. would assume control of Gaza, nor where displaced Palestinians would be permanently settled. His vision of economic redevelopment contrasts sharply with the reality of ongoing conflict and destruction in the enclave. The proposal faces overwhelming opposition from international leaders, making its implementation highly unlikely.
