U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that efforts to de-escalate the Russia-Ukraine war are “somewhat under control,” citing ongoing diplomatic talks and temporary agreements. Speaking to Clay Travis, founder of Outkick, during an interview aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the importance of “rational discussions” and maintaining good relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to help bring the conflict to an end.
Trump revealed he recently held separate talks with both Putin and Zelenskiy in an effort to negotiate peace. The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, continues to claim lives and damage infrastructure. While Trump aimed to secure a 30-day ceasefire, he fell short of that goal. However, the discussions led to a temporary breakthrough: Putin reportedly agreed to halt Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for 30 days. In response, Zelenskiy said he would also honor such a pause.
Though not a full ceasefire, the move is being viewed as a positive step toward reducing hostilities and creating space for further negotiations. Trump’s engagement in the ongoing conflict adds a unique political dimension, as he positions himself as a mediator with ties to both leaders.
The former president’s involvement in the peace talks has sparked global attention, especially ahead of the upcoming U.S. election. Analysts say even partial success could boost Trump’s foreign policy credibility. As the Russia-Ukraine war drags on, even a temporary pause in attacks offers hope for eventual resolution.
