U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas on Tuesday, stating that the militant group must disarm or face swift and possibly violent consequences. His remarks came a day after Hamas released the last remaining Israeli hostages from Gaza, while Israel freed Palestinian detainees under a ceasefire agreement brokered by Trump.
Despite the truce, Hamas has not publicly pledged to lay down its weapons. “If they don’t disarm, we will disarm them. And it will happen quickly and perhaps violently,” Trump said during a meeting at the White House with Argentine President Javier Milei.
Trump revealed that he communicated the message to Hamas through intermediaries, asserting that the group had agreed to comply with his 20-point peace proposal. “I spoke to Hamas, and I said, you’re going to disarm, right? Yes, sir, we’re going to disarm. That’s what they told me,” he explained.
The U.S.-brokered peace initiative faces uncertainty as tensions continue to rise in the region. After Trump’s recent visit to Israel and Egypt, the outlook for stability has dimmed. Israel has tightened restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza and kept border crossings closed, further straining conditions in the war-torn enclave.
Meanwhile, Hamas has reasserted control by executing suspected rivals in public, a move that has drawn international criticism. Trump defended the group’s actions against other factions, describing them as efforts to “restore order” in Gaza.
As the ceasefire remains fragile, global observers are watching whether Hamas will follow through on its commitment to disarm and whether Trump’s Middle East peace efforts can bring lasting stability to the region.
