U.S. President Donald Trump voiced fresh frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday over the intensifying Ukraine war, cautioning that Putin was “playing with fire” by rejecting ceasefire talks while escalating drone and missile strikes. Despite tensions, Trump said he’s not ready to impose new sanctions, aiming to keep peace talks viable.
Russia has proposed resuming negotiations with Ukraine on June 2 in Istanbul, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Kyiv has yet to confirm participation. Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that Ukraine has already submitted a memorandum for a potential settlement and urged Russia to do the same to ensure productive dialogue.
Tensions between the U.S. and Russia are rising as the war, now in its third year, escalates. Moscow claimed to have shot down 296 Ukrainian drones overnight across 13 regions. Ukraine reported striking several Russian weapon factories and said Russia launched 88 drones and five ballistic missiles. Ukraine also warned of a buildup of 50,000 Russian troops near the Sumy region.
Putin reportedly demands NATO halt its expansion into former Soviet states and the partial lifting of Western sanctions as conditions for a ceasefire. Talks earlier this month in Istanbul, held under Trump’s pressure, failed to produce results. Trump hinted that if Putin is delaying talks strategically, the U.S. response could change.
Meanwhile, Germany and Ukraine announced plans to co-produce long-range missiles—sparking condemnation from Moscow. Russia’s Defense Minister accused NATO of leveraging the Ukraine war to boost its military presence in Eastern Europe.
Since invading in February 2022, Russia controls nearly 20% of Ukraine. Despite recent gains, the war continues to take a high toll in lives and military resources on both sides.
