U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The upcoming meeting marks a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to restore diplomatic relations between Washington and Damascus, which had been strained for years under former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
Since taking power from Assad last December, President al-Sharaa has embarked on multiple international trips aimed at rebuilding Syria’s global relationships. His transitional government has been actively seeking to reintegrate Syria into the international community and strengthen political and economic cooperation with key nations, including the United States.
President Trump has expressed a willingness to foster improved relations with al-Sharaa’s government. In a bold move last June, he lifted most U.S. sanctions imposed on Syria, signaling a major shift in U.S. foreign policy. The decision came shortly after Trump and al-Sharaa met in Saudi Arabia last May, where both leaders discussed opportunities for peace and economic rebuilding in the war-torn nation.
During a press briefing, Leavitt emphasized the administration’s optimism, stating, “When the president was in the Middle East, he made the historic decision to lift sanctions on Syria to give them a real chance at peace. We’ve seen encouraging progress under their new leadership.”
The White House meeting underscores a new chapter in U.S.-Syria relations, reflecting Trump’s commitment to promoting regional stability and peace through diplomacy rather than isolation. As both nations look ahead, the discussions are expected to cover key issues including reconstruction, counterterrorism, and regional partnerships—marking a potential turning point in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
