The United States joined 90 other nations at the United Nations General Assembly in calling for Russia to immediately and unconditionally return all Ukrainian children who have been forcibly transferred or deported since the start of the war. The resolution, backed by 193 member states, urges Moscow to halt the practice and ensure the safe repatriation of minors taken from Ukraine or Russian-occupied territories.
The vote came just one day after U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss possible steps toward ending the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high. Russia pushed nations to oppose the resolution, claiming it was built on misinformation. Deputy U.N. Ambassador Maria Zabolotskaya argued that supporting the measure would fuel “lies, war and confrontation,” while opposing it would support peace.
Ultimately, Russia and 11 other countries voted against the resolution, while 57 abstained. Although General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant symbolic weight and reflect global sentiment regarding the war and Russia’s actions.
Ukraine has long accused Russia of abducting tens of thousands of children, relocating them without consent, and placing them in occupied territories or within Russia itself. Moscow has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, saying it is protecting vulnerable children from active war zones. The issue gained further international attention after U.S. First Lady Melania Trump made child repatriation a priority, stating in October that communication channels with Putin had led to some successful reunifications.
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, alleging illegal deportation of Ukrainian children—a move Russia condemned as politically motivated. As the conflict continues, global pressure is intensifying for accountability and the safe return of all displaced Ukrainian children.
