"Vikings" season 6 is sure to arrive after the show was renewed. History confirmed its renewal in September 2017 and it was a bit surprising since the fifth season had not even premiered yet at that time.
According to TV Line, “Vikings” season 6 will have 20 episodes in total but just like with season 5, it will be split into two. Thus, the sixth installment will have part 1 and part 2 as well, and as usual, there will be around 10 months of a break before the second part is released.
Commenting on the series’s renewal, creator and showrunner Michael Hirst told Variety, “It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with History and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of ‘Vikings.’” He added, “Now we are ready to begin production of a 20 episode season six that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience.”
Hirst is also busy with churning out ideas for storylines. He has written a few episodes and is continuously writing to complete “Vikings” season 6. The cast and crew are currently filming on location in County Wicklow, Ireland.
Ragnar’s Return
Now, with the mention of the filming location, there were speculations that Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) is coming back for the sixth season. It all started when a fan named Dino Kearns posted a photo of himself and Fimmel on Instagram. Apparently, the image was taken in Ireland, where “Vikings” season 6 is being filmed right now.
The man also uploaded a series of photos that appear to be of the “Vikings” set. He has photos with other cast members too and this made it more convincing that Fimmel may really be in the area to shoot his return in “Vikings” season 6.
In one of the post, the fan wrote: “Casually standing here watching the Vikings being filmed.” He also said that he did not see Lagertha and fans were worried that she was killed off.
If Ragnar is set to return, it is interesting to see how the writers will present his reappearance since he already died in season 4. It can be recalled that he was captured by King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) and subsequently thrown in a snake pit.
Storyline
“Viking” season 6’s storyline will depend on the things that will transpire in season 5’s finale. Since the second half has yet to be released, in November, it is hard to tell what the plot for the next episodes will be.
Air Date
“Vikings” season 6 may arrive in November 2019 if it will follow the same release date pattern of the previous seasons. Meanwhile, the second part of “Vikings” season 5 is set to debut on Nov. 28 at 10 p.m. on History.
