Wendy’s Japan and First Kitchen are celebrating Japan’s autumn moon-viewing tradition with the launch of tsukimi burgers. These limited-time offerings, available from September 5 to late October, feature unique ingredients like mochi rice cakes and bourbon barbecue sauce, capturing the essence of the season.
First Kitchen Combines Tradition and Innovation with Tsukimi Burgers Featuring Mochi and Savory Flavors
In Japan, autumn is celebrated not only for its vibrant foliage but also for its unique seasonal foods, notably eggs. According to SoraNews24, this tradition is tied to the centuries-old custom of moon viewing, known as tsukimi, where people gather to admire the full moon in September and October. Tsukimi also refers to serving noodles with a raw egg, resembling the full moon with its round, golden yolk.
In recent years, the concept of tsukimi has expanded beyond noodles to include burgers, with fast food chains introducing unique tsukimi burgers in early fall. First Kitchen and Wendy’s Japan have captured attention this year with their tsukimi burger offerings, each presenting two distinct variations.
First Kitchen has taken a creative approach with its tsukimi burgers by incorporating a round mochi rice cake alongside the traditional fried egg, a nod to Japanese folklore where rabbits on the moon are said to make mochi. Their standout item, the Tsukimi Mochi Teriyaki Ginger Burger (priced at 890 yen or approximately $6), features a blend of Japanese seasonings, including bonito and kombu dashi in the mochi, and a rich Hatcho miso teriyaki sauce. For those preferring chicken, the Tsukimi Mochi Teriyaki Ginger Chicken Tatsumi Burger (790 yen) offers a crispy fried chicken fillet instead of a beef patty.
Wendy’s Japan Unveils Tsukimi B.B.P. Burgers with Barbecue, Bacon, and Potato for Fall Season
Wendy’s Japan, which partners with First Kitchen, has introduced its tsukimi burgers, dubbed the Tsukimi B.B.P. Burgers—standing for “barbecue, bacon, and potato.” These burgers come with a fried egg, bourbon barbecue sauce, bacon strips, hash browns, and cheese, available in both beef and chicken variations. The Tsukimi B.B.P. Burger with a beef patty is priced at 990 yen, while the chicken filet version costs 890 yen. Wendy’s offers a Jr. Tsukimi B.B.P. Burger at 720 yen for those with a smaller appetite.
These seasonal tsukimi sandwiches will be available at First Kitchen and Wendy’s Japan locations starting September 5 and will remain on the menu until late October.
