Microsoft teamed up with Digital Foundry to debut the specs of its recently revamped XBox console. The revamp, titled Project Scorpio, revealed that the new XBox will feature eight custom x86 cores at 2.3GHz and 40 customised compute units at 1172MHz, a 12GB GDDR5 memory, 326GB/s memory bandwidth, and a 1TB 2.5-inch hard drive, among others.
Two of the features that stood out could not help fans but compare it to its predecessor XBox One. The Telegraph reported that the new console will be running the games in 4K, promising to eclipse the capabilities of Sony’s PS4. As an example, Microsoft demoed Forza Motorsport, and showed how the game ran in 4K at a “remarkable” 60 frames per second.
As comparison, Project Scorpio had the new XBox console running at six teraflops per second, as compared to XBox One at 1.32 teraflops per second and the PS4 Pro at 4.12 teraflops per second.
Moreover, the new XBox console will reportedly launched without a dedicated Kinect port, Express UK said. Although it was said to be unsurprising considering the fact that the XBox One S will also be launched without a Kinect port either, gamers would need to purchase their own adaptor to make Kinect work with Project Scorpio.
The new console is expected to be officially launched at the E3 gaming expo, which will be held in June. However, Dave Thier for Forbes isn’t sure about the console’s appeal to the casual gamer. He writes, “It is a big, powerful machine aimed at people who want fancy graphics and are willing to pay for them. It has entertainment options, but they're not the focus.”
