YARMOUTH, Maine, Feb. 12, 2017 -- In celebration of National Pet Dental Health Month this February, Yarmouth Veterinary Center is raising awareness of the importance of dental care for pets of all shapes and sizes. Good dental hygiene routines are simple to instill in pets when they are young and can prevent a multitude of painful health problems in later life stages. Yarmouth Veterinary Center specializes in caring for the health of countless dogs, cats, birds, small animals, and other pets in the Yarmouth and Portland areas of Maine, including dental health, each year.
Many pet owners can relate to tolerating the bad breath of their cat or dog. Many more, however, might not be aware of the debilitating health problems that cultivate from it. Untreated halitosis, gingivitis, and other dental diseases could leave dogs, cats, and other pets at risk for heart problems, strokes, and diseases that spread to vital organs. Most of these disorders often come with an extensive amount of pain and suffering.
The Yarmouth Veterinary Center, however, aims to change that. They are celebrating National Pet Dental Health Month this February by increasing awareness of dental hygiene for all pets. Located in Yarmouth, Maine, the clinic services hundreds of animals each year, from dogs to cats to birds and small animals. Many of the conditions they treat stem from gingivitis. Even though gingivitis is completely preventable, it is sadly the most common condition pets suffer every year.
"We're taught to brush our teeth every day to maintain good oral health and take care of ourselves. It's something we do every day without a second thought," says Dr. Louise LeBoeuf, DVM, co-veterinarian at Yarmouth Veterinary Center. "Why not do the same for our pets, too?"
"Brushing your pet's teeth is a simple process that can be trained and incorporated into your daily routine," says Dr. Peter Smith, DVM. "I tell my patients all the time that regular brushing and tooth cleanings by your veterinarian will promote good health for your pets and cost far less than dealing with the potential complications. It's far less painful for them as well as being a humane solution."
Yarmouth Veterinary Center provides several dental cleaning options for dogs, cats, and other animals. Pets can be trained to accept good dental hygiene habits from a young age. Dental friendly treats and toys also maintain tooth health by naturally scraping away plaque as the animals chew on them. With consistency and a little patience, teaching them good dental habits can reap lasting rewards into their old age.
