Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Friday that he plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday as part of ongoing efforts to bring an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The high-level meeting is expected to focus on territorial issues, long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, and finalizing key elements of a proposed peace framework.
According to Zelenskiy, the talks with Trump are aimed at “finalizing everything as much as we can,” signaling that negotiations have reached an advanced stage. The Ukrainian leader revealed that a 20-point peace plan is now approximately 90% complete, with most of the remaining work centered on security guarantees. These guarantees are considered a critical component of any agreement, as Ukraine seeks to prevent future aggression and ensure lasting stability in the region.
Zelenskiy emphasized that while substantial progress has been made, several sensitive issues remain unresolved and still require compromise. He plans to raise these outstanding points directly with Trump during their meeting. Among the topics expected to be discussed is the possibility of applying additional international pressure on Russia to support the peace process and ensure compliance with any future agreements.
The Ukrainian president also noted that Ukraine’s allies could play an important role in maintaining security during potential referendums or elections that may take place as part of a broader settlement. International involvement, he suggested, could help guarantee transparency and stability during these critical steps.
Despite the optimistic tone surrounding the progress of the peace plan, Zelenskiy struck a cautious note regarding the outcome of the upcoming meeting. When asked whether Sunday’s talks with Trump could result in the signing of formal agreements, he said he could not confirm that such an outcome would occur.
The meeting between Zelenskiy and Trump comes amid heightened global attention on the Ukraine conflict and renewed diplomatic efforts to achieve a negotiated resolution. Observers see the talks as a potentially significant moment in shaping the next phase of peace negotiations, even if immediate agreements are not finalized.
