Lecturer, Chinese urban history, University of Leicester
I am lecturer in modern Chinese urban history at the Centre for Urban History, University of Leicester. As a historian of urbanization in China, my research explores how the world's most populous country has become its newest urban society. My first book explained Chinese urbanization in the first half of the twentieth century, and argued that it was driven by industrialization and the rise of the modern state, and that it continued throughout the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance, as World War II in China is known. I am now writing a history of urban planning in China throughout the twentieth century to understand the historical foundation of contemporary Chinese urbanization.
