‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ failed to match expectations after it bombed at the domestic box office upon its release in the United States. However, the film managed to secure the number one spot in China the opening weekend. Meanwhile, Marvel’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ claimed victory at $80 million in earnings.
Disney’s adventure-fantasy film performed poorly during its opening over the Memorial Day weekend as reflected on the numbers posted by Box Office Mojo. So far, it only managed to earn $99.1 million in total worldwide sales against a massive production budget of $170 million. The film grossed $9.7 million on its premiere on May 27 and dropped 11.8% on the fourth day with only $34.1 – well under the studio’s goal of $60 million for the four-day weekend.
In comparison, the first film ‘Alice In Wonderland’ had a production budget of $200 million but brought in $40 million on the first day it premiered on March 5, 2010. It went on to earn $125.1 million by the fourth day since its release. Worldwide box office profit amounted to $1.02 billion – making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all time during its theatrical run.
Despite bombing in the domestic box office, ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ managed to top the Chinese box office after earning $27.1 million upon release. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel dominated charts just after Jon Favreau’s ‘The Jungle Book’, which continues to enjoy the number one spot. It was an easy win for the sequel since Bryan Singer’s equally long-anticipated ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ doesn’t open in the country until June 3.
Meanwhile, things are looking up for Marvel’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ after it secured the top spot over the Memorial Day weekend release. The studio reported an estimated $80 million on the fourth day of its theatrical run since the film opened on May 27. However, it took in $30 million less than 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.
