Australia will formally begin a government-backed Royal Commission into antisemitism on Tuesday, following the deadly Bondi Beach Hanukkah attack that left 15 people dead last December. The mass shooting at a Jewish celebration in Sydney shocked the nation, known for its strict gun control laws, and intensified calls for tougher action against hate crimes and extremism.
Authorities allege the father-and-son gunmen were inspired by Islamic State ideology, raising renewed concerns about radicalization and domestic security. The tragedy not only devastated Australia’s Jewish community but also triggered broader debate about antisemitism, social cohesion, and national safety.
The Royal Commission, Australia’s highest form of public inquiry with the power to compel witnesses and gather evidence, will be led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell. The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach shooting, as well as the wider issue of antisemitism in Australia. It will also explore how hate-driven violence affects multicultural harmony and community relations. The commission is expected to deliver its findings by December this year.
Justice Bell is scheduled to make an opening statement at a Sydney court outlining how she intends to approach the inquiry’s terms of reference. No testimony or evidence will be presented at the opening session.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese initially resisted establishing a Royal Commission, citing concerns that such investigations can take years to conclude. His reluctance drew criticism from Jewish organizations and families of the victims, who demanded stronger government action against antisemitism and extremist violence.
The Bondi Beach attack followed a series of antisemitic incidents across Australia, including the firebombing of a synagogue in Melbourne. These events have intensified national discussions about combating hate speech, preventing radicalization, and strengthening protections for religious communities.
