The cast of “Avatar 2” mentioned in previous interviews that the highly anticipated sequel film is heavily set underwater. And, recently, director James Cameron hinted at how his upcoming project will be different from the blockbuster hit “Aquaman.”
The latest major DC Universe film, directed by James Wan, is currently hailed the highest grossing film of the franchise after garnering over $1.1 billion in the box office. For obvious reasons, “Aquaman” is mostly set underwater. But, unlike the Jason Momoa-led movie, the “Avatar 2” director told Yahoo! he is “very literal” in making underwater-themed films and that he needs them to “look like its real.”
It must be noted, though, that Cameron does not imply “Aquaman” to be less of a film than what “Avatar 2” would be. Instead, he commented that the DC Universe movie did a fine job in presenting a “dreamlike disconnection from any sense of physics or reality.” Cameron added that he felt like “Aquaman’s” portrayal of underwater “exists in a somewhere between a Greek mythic and a fairy tale landscape.
“And while I can enjoy [‘Aquaman’], I don’t resonate with it because it doesn’t look real. It doesn’t help us with our issues of understanding and exploring, or preserving the ocean. Although, they did throw in a couple of things with whales and things like that to remind us that we are kind of using the ocean as a toilet and as a garbage dump. So I applaud the film for that,” Cameron further explained. And it might be telling fans what to expect with “Avatar 2.”
Sigourney Weaver, who will return to “Avatar 2” previously shared her experience in actually filming underwater. “We learned how to free dive and we did many scenes underwater … The one scary thing is sometimes you have to be weighted down to be on the bottom,” the veteran actress told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Avatar 2” is slated to premiere on Dec. 18, 2020. But the production of a third sequel has also reportedly wrapped last year.
