Following his rather noisy exit with the Los Angeles years prior, D’Angelo Russell is apparently being eyed by the team to bring him back into its roster. The source of the rumor is Arye Abraham, a young and avid Lakers fan who made headlines years ago during Dwight Howard’s free agency, BR reported.
“A source within the Lakers organization not authorized to speak publicly has confirmed to me that the Lakers have (a) strong interest in free agent guard D’Angelo Russell,” Abraham recently tweeted. “I’m told the Lakers FO plan to have a face to face meeting with Russell at the beginning of free agency.”
So how likely is this scenario? Could D’Angelo Russell really return to the Lakers, a team that essentially made him bait for the Brooklyn Nets to take on the massive contract of Timofey Mozgov? Well, rumors are saying that he’s apparently interested.
Apart from Abraham, Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus has also backed this claim saying that Magic Johnson parting ways with the Lakers have opened up this possibility. It can be remembered that Johnson called D’Angelo Russell as a player that is lacking leadership skills. That proved to be way off the mark as the 23-year-old quickly became the Nets’ main core after integrating him into their roster following the Mozgov trade.
And now that Johnson is gone, D’Angelo Russell is apparently open to at least a dialogue with the Lakers. Pincus even claims that people close to the young star are backing this rumor if the Nets let him go amidst rumors that Kyrie Irving is headed to Brooklyn soon.
Adding more fuel to the speculation is Anthony Davis following D’Angelo Russell on Instagram just this Friday. And there’s also this tweet from Kyle Kuzma as well. Of course, it’s important to remember that this is merely rumors at this point and Russell could very much stay with the Nets.
But Davis and Kuzma’s social media activity does interestingly align with Pincus and Abraham’s claims. Whatever the case, we’ll be finding out soon what the Lakers is planning to offer D’Angelo Russell and if Russell himself agree to these yet-to-be-revealed terms.
