Denmark agreed to discuss Arctic security with the U.S., Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen announced after speaking with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their 20-minute conversation covered Ukraine, European security, and the Middle East. The U.S. State Department emphasized the strong relationship between the two nations.

The discussion comes as President Donald Trump reiterates interest in Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory. Trump has not ruled out military or economic measures to acquire Greenland, which holds strategic importance due to its location on the shortest route between Europe and North America. The region is also critical to U.S. ballistic missile defense systems.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently emphasized that Greenland's future lies in its people's hands. Frederiksen and Trump had a tense call, according to European sources, with Trump expressing serious interest in acquiring Greenland. However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has reinforced that the island is not for sale and continues to push for independence.

The Danish Foreign Ministry confirmed Arctic security will be addressed in future discussions involving Denmark, the U.S., and Greenland. While Trump had floated the idea of acquiring Greenland in 2019, his recent statements about potential forceful measures surprised many in Denmark.

As the Arctic gains geopolitical importance, this issue highlights the strategic value of Greenland and the complexities of its political future.
