Destiny 2 Developers Tried Cheating Players Out Of XP, Avalanche Of Complaints Ensue

Even before its launch, Destiny 2 has been facing a lot of heat from the community for everything from its gameplay balance, multiple exploits, and an anti-consumer microtransaction system. Now, developers have to cope with players again when it was discovered that Bungie tried to cheat gamers out of their hard-earned experience points.

The new debacle has to do with a hidden feature in Destiny 2, which essentially limited the amount of XP that players got based on several factors. According to analyses that some members of the community have done, the game basically reduced the amount of XP gained based on the mode as well as the amount of time spent playing the game, Ars Technica reports.

It was bad enough that there are mechanics essentially preventing dedicated players from leveling up, but what really angered gamers was the fact that they were never notified of the existence of the feature. When Bungie learned that it had been found out, the company promptly confirmed the discovery of the players and promised to provide a fix.

Unfortunately, the developers only made things worse because the fix that they have in mind is basically reducing XP gains of all players in every part of the game. This would essentially double the amount of XP needed to level up, which leads to more grinding in a game that is already panned for being too grind-y.

As Kotaku points out, a lot of these problems stem from Bungie’s inability to communicate with its community. So many complaints go unheard or ignored, and the company simply refuses to address certain problems that gamers have brought up about the game.

So far, Destiny 2 has been performing well in terms of sales and player-retention, and this isn’t likely to change. For all the complaints that gamers have launched against the title and its predecessor, they simply can’t seem to stay away from blasting aliens in the face in this online, multiplayer, FPS.
