Bungie’s surprises do not end with a free limited-time event for “Destiny 2” this week. The developer also announced that a showcase is happening on Aug. 24, and it was enough to revive hopes of seeing the first teasers for The Witch Queen expansion.
Bungie released officially announced the special “Destiny 2” event on Twitter on Wednesday. Aside from the event’s date, the teaser image does not say much about what will be included in the showcase. For now, the developer left fans with the cryptic tagline, “Survive the truth.” But it is worth noting that Bungie promised in June that more details about The Witch Queen will be revealed this summer.

The showcase announcement was enough for fans to speculate that the event will contain announcements about the much-awaited expansion. Bungie has provided some hints about The Witch Queen expansion, but nothing concrete yet. In 2020, the developer announced that it will release “full arc” expansions as part of “Destiny 2’s” next era that started with Beyond Light and will be followed by The Witch Queen and Lightfall.
The first seasonal content for Beyond Light Season of the Hunt was released last November, followed by Season of the Chosen last February. Its third and final update Season of the Splicer started in May and is expected to end on Aug. 24, making the event date the official countdown to the release of the next “Destiny 2” expansion.
However, The Witch Queen expansion would still take a few months to launch even if it is officially unveiled next month. The “Destiny 2” developer said in a blog post last February that The Witch Queen has been delayed. “As we began to scale production on the Witch Queen last year, we made the difficult but important decision to move its release to early 2022,” Bungie said.
In the same blog post, Bungie said The Witch Queen will serve as a bridge for the narrative that was told in Beyond Light and the story that will unfold in Lightfall. Bungie said these expansions, and a confirmed additional chapter after Lightfall, are planned as the proper conclusion for the “Destiny” saga.
Fans will have to wait for further announcements for other details on the “Destiny 2” showcase. But since most events are still happening virtually, the presentation is likely hosted on online and streaming platforms.
