In a fiery critique, conservative commentator Megyn Kelly took aim at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, accusing him of lying about his military service and “besmirching the American people” during a recent CNN interview. Walz, who is the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, has faced growing scrutiny over his past claims about serving in the military.
The controversy stems from an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Thursday, August 29, where Walz was questioned about his previous statements that he "carried weapons in war" despite not having been deployed in a war zone. When asked to clarify, Walz attributed the confusion to his casual speaking style, suggesting that his use of language may have been misleading but unintentional.
Walz’s response did little to quell the criticism. Kelly, known for her sharp commentary, swiftly reacted by sharing the clip of the interview on social media, where she accused the Minnesota governor of dishonesty. Kelly argued that Walz’s attempt to downplay his statements by blaming poor grammar was insulting to those who have genuinely served in combat.
The former Fox News host’s comments highlighted what she perceives as a pattern of dishonesty from Walz, particularly in the context of his military service. She emphasized that ordinary Americans do not “steal valor” by falsely claiming military achievements and that Walz’s explanations were a disservice to the public.
Kelly’s criticism comes on the heels of broader discussions about Walz’s role in Harris’s campaign. In her SiriusXM podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show, she had previously referred to Walz as Harris’s “emotional support governor,” a jab at his presence during the interview. Kelly expressed frustration that the interview did not adequately address pressing issues facing the Democratic ticket, including Harris’s qualifications and policy plans.
The backlash against Walz has been further fueled by his perceived closeness to Harris, with some questioning whether his presence in the campaign is an attempt to bolster her perceived weaknesses. The interview, intended as a significant media moment for the Democratic ticket, has instead sparked controversy and criticism from conservative voices like Kelly.
Adding to the criticism, former President Donald Trump also weighed in on the interview. In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged Bash to conduct a “tough” interview, claiming that a fair but firm approach would expose Harris as “totally inept.” Trump’s remarks echoed the sentiments of many of his supporters, who see Harris and Walz as unfit for leadership.
The controversy surrounding Walz’s military service and his role in Harris’s campaign is likely to continue as the election draws closer. With critics like Kelly and Trump amplifying their attacks, Walz and Harris face an uphill battle in convincing voters of their credibility and competence.
