As the coronavirus pandemic has turned the economy of the United States upside down, lawmakers scrambled to put together the stimulus package to keep the economy afloat. However, following reports that Harvard also received a portion of the aid, President Donald Trump demanded that the ivy league institution return it.
The New York Post reports that Trump demanded again that the ivy league university return the $8.6 million in coronavirus aid, following the university’s announcement that it planned to keep the money. “Harvard should give the money back now. Their whole “endowment” system should be looked at!” tweeted Trump. During a briefing, Trump stated that it is because of the massive endowment the school has, amounting to nearly $41 billion, that they should return the money allocated to them by the government.
“Harvard is going to pay back the money and they shouldn’t be taking it,” said Trump during the briefing. Trump also pointed out the endowment that the university has, making them one of, if not, the wealthiest university in the world.
The official twitter account for Harvard said that the millions of dollars in coronavirus aid that it received would be for the students who are facing financial issues due to the pandemic. Harvard also said that the aid they received did not fall under the Paycheck Protection Program.
Meanwhile, as the lockdown continues for a few weeks, with the expected lift in May, Trump, as well as some state governors in the south are already keen on reopening the states to the public. There has been some division evident among the states in a historical North vs. South regarding its respective plans in whether or not to reopen as soon as May. This comes as Trump is embroiled in a sort of feud between the state governors over the past few weeks.
Trump, keeping his reelection chances in mind, has often implied that being able to return to normal life and the economy going back to normal is going to happen soon. “We are opening up America again. Twenty states representing 40 percent of the population have announced that they are making plans and preparations to safely restart their economies in the very near future” announced Trump.
