Former President Donald Trump has been a staunch critic of mail-in voting despite doing so himself. After continuously asserting voter fraud claims through this method of voting, Trump requested a mail-in ballot as he is set to vote in the municipal elections.
Last week on Friday, Trump requested a mail-in ballot to vote in the municipal elections in Palm Beach County, Florida. The former president’s request for a mail-in ballot comes almost a week after the deadline to have a ballot sent back through mail. Mail ballots have to be requested on Tuesday and picked up by the voter or a designated representative. The former president may have had an associate pick up the mail-in ballot on his behalf. Trump’s request also comes as a stark contrast to his opposition on mail-in ballots during the November 20 elections last year where he lost to Joe Biden.
This would be the third time Trump has opted to vote through mail, only having voted in person once in Palm Beach. The former president blasted universal mail-in voting throughout his campaign last year, claiming that the method would be full of voter fraud, a claim he still made even after losing to Biden in the elections. Many Americans have had to vote by mail last year due to safety concerns because of the ongoing pandemic. Despite Trump’s claims of voter fraud due to mail-in ballots, his claims have been widely refuted by election officials and from both sides. No evidence of voter fraud has been found.
Unable to accept election defeat, Trump asserted his fraud claims when he filed lawsuits contesting the results in the swing states that went to Biden. Some of his petitions were made to the Supreme Court, which ultimately refused to hear the lawsuits, and recently, the high court rejected the last of three cases related to the elections by Trump and his allies. The Supreme Court rejected Trump’s last request without comment, which involved the election results in Wisconsin, where Biden won against him by a margin of over 20,000 votes. Biden was sworn in on January 20.
