With unified world titles under his name, Errol Spence Jr. is undeniably the sought-after boxing opponent in the welterweight division. The latest reports indicate that his next clash will be against Danny Garcia, but fans have yet to hear a specific timeline.
Errol Spence Jr to fight Danny Garcia in 2020
Spence was last seen in the ring against Shawn Porter in September for the unification match, which he won in a split decision. And boxing fans have been looking forward to seeing him defend his WBC and IBF titles ever since.
Shortly after his fight with Porter, Spence told reporters that he was slated to go up against Garcia in January. However, he was involved in a car crash in October in Dallas, Texas. He was hospitalized after the incident but, fortunately, did not sustain major injuries.
Still, it prevented him from going back to the ring as planned. Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened, preventing any major sporting events from taking place for the most part of 2020’s first half.
There is no report to indicate that Spence’s next opponent has changed, but fans are still waiting for their match-up to be scheduled. In an interview earlier this year, Spence mentioned he would like to have his next fight in fall. That’s one possibility, but there are plenty of other factors to consider other than his physical preparedness, especially concerning COVID-19, like the venue of his next match. Spence fought 24 of his 26 professional fights in the United States. But the country remains the epicenter of COVID-19 right now with the total of confirmed cases jumping over the 4 million mark recently.
Errol Spence Jr wants Manny Pacquiao next
Spence and his trainer Derrick James have maintained the undefeated boxer does not need a tune-up match before his first event to defend his championship belts. Nevertheless, the prolonged delay of his next match should be a good chance to get him back in shape following his accident. With that, Spence has also been confident that he can take on other big names in the welterweight division, such as Manny Pacquiao.
Spence has repeatedly mentioned in various interviews that he would like to fight Pacquiao before the Filipino boxer retires. Going after Pacquiao is a logical choice as it has the potential to generate huge payout while also opening an opportunity for Spence to get another title. Pacquiao is the reigning WBA (Super) welterweight champion after defeating Keith Thurman last year.
