European leaders are calling for a special envoy to ensure Europe plays a significant role in Ukraine peace negotiations after the U.S., under President Donald Trump, excluded the continent from the talks. Trump's Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, stated that Europe would not have a seat at the table, prompting an emergency meeting led by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The meeting will focus on immediate aid to Ukraine, European security guarantees for Kyiv, and strengthening collective security. However, Europe’s previous summits have highlighted its political disunity and lack of a cohesive strategy to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, suggested appointing a special envoy similar to Martti Ahtisaari, who played a key role in Kosovo’s peace process. This envoy would engage with all key stakeholders, including Moscow, Kyiv, Washington, and European capitals.
The call for an envoy follows Trump's unexpected call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, initiating peace talks without consulting European allies or Ukraine. U.S. Vice President JD Vance further criticized Europe’s democracies at the Munich conference.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic emphasized the need for a respected figure to manage the peace process, someone acknowledged by Moscow, Kyiv, Washington, and global leaders. This high-profile envoy would provide Europe with a voice in the Ukraine conflict and contribute to lasting peace.
The proposal reflects growing concerns over Europe's diminishing influence in global diplomacy, particularly in the Ukraine-Russia war, and underscores the urgency for unified European action and leadership.
