Faribault Foods, Inc. has issued a recall on its canned beans products that have been distributed in the U.S. It was said that there is a risk for botulism poisoning due to seal problems.
As per Fox Business, because of the issue in sealing the beans, there is a danger of bacterial growth inside the cans, and once they are consumed, poisoning is possible. Based on the report, the affected Faribault's Food products include the 15-ounce cans of S&W Organic Black Beans, O Organic Brand Chili Beans, and O Organic Brand Black Beans.
The complaints that led to the recall
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that these bean products "may have a compromised hermetic seal" that may bring about leaks, bloating, or let bacteria grow inside the product, and this could cause serious illness.
The food agency announced the recall after getting complaints about the “hermetic seal." Faribault also posted the recall on its website and listed a recall for a specific batch of the canned beans that the company distributed to retail stores nationwide. The food manufacturer noted that these were delivered between the months of February 2021 and April 2021.
The FDA stated that the affected lots should be returned, replaced or refunded by Faribault Food. The company disclosed that since the problem was detected, it has already fixed the problem.
Faribault also assured the public that aside from the product lots on the list of the recall, no other items are affected so everything else is safe.
“The quality and safety of our products are the top priority for our company,” Faribault stated in the FDA recall notice. “We apologize to our retail customers and consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this recall. We are working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on this voluntary recall and will cooperate with them fully.”
The possible effect of compromised seal
As mentioned earlier, the seal issue may cause bacteria to grow on the canned beans and once digested, it may lead to clostridium botulinum poisoning. It was said that individuals will only notice the effect six hours after the food was ingested.
Finally, the individual may experience slurred speech, double vision, drooping eyelids, muscle weakness and difficulty in swallowing. This type of food poisoning is rare but can cause paralysis, serious illness and death.
