Ford is set to debut its first affordable electric pickup in 2027, a cornerstone of the company’s aggressive push into the electric vehicle sector. This new truck will be built on Ford’s innovative platform, designed to offer more value and utility to budget-conscious consumers.
Project T3: Ford’s Next-Generation Electric Pickup
Big alterations to Ford's next electric vehicle plans, including two new pickups, were disclosed. The next generation, "Project T3," will be built on Ford's new platform, and the company's first inexpensive electric vehicle will be an electric truck.
According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, "We are committed to innovating in America, creating jobs and delivering incredible new electric and hybrid vehicles" (Farrell, 2017).
Ford Focuses on Hybrid Technology and Electrified Options
Ford is shifting its car strategy to prioritize hybrid technology and provide a wider variety of electrified options.
This is part of Ford's strategy to reduce expenses and increase its presence in software and commercial vehicle markets, where the company thinks it has a competitive edge.
"We’re committed to creating long-term value by building a competitive and profitable business," stated John Lawler, Ford's chief financial officer.
The next-generation electric vehicles from Ford will begin with a commercial electric van that is digitally enhanced. The Ohio Assembly Plant will begin assembling Ford's new electric van in 2026.
Ford's Affordable Electric Pickup Set for 2027 Debut
The first vehicle based on Ford's forthcoming affordable platform will be an electric truck, and it will debut in 2027. Leading the charge on next-gen vehicle research and "bending the cost curve on electric vehicles" is Ford's skunkworks division in California.
"Customers who want more for their money"—that is, a greater amount of utility, usability, and range—are the target market for Ford's inexpensive electric truck.
Ford's Strategy to Save Costs and Increase Efficiency
A systems integration strategy is helping the group save money and work more efficiently. "Will go deeper into the supply chain and benchmark cost against the best competitors in the world," Ford stated as part of the marketing plan.
Electrek shares that after this reasonably priced electric pickup, Ford will unveil their next-generation electric truck, codenamed "Project T3." In announcing the electric pickup, Ford said it will continue its century-long tradition of producing industry-leading trucks, such as the F-150 Lightning.
The new electric truck from Ford will not be unveiled until the middle of 2027, which is two years later than originally projected.
BlueOval City to Assemble Ford’s New Electric Pickup
The new vehicle would "offer features and experiences never seen on any Ford truck," according to Ford, who listened to Lightning buyers' suggestions. Enhanced aerodynamics and bidirectional charging are part of the plan. Still, the BlueOval City EV Center in Tennessee will be the site of assembly for the electric truck.
Ford claims that by delaying the launch, it would be able to take advantage of more affordable battery technology and other innovations in the market.
