Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died at 88 after battling double pneumonia. World leaders expressed deep sorrow and reverence for a pontiff who championed peace, justice, and compassion.

U.S. President Donald Trump praised him as a "good man" and ordered flags flown at half-staff. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Argentina’s President Javier Milei remembered him as a spiritual guide and personal mentor. French President Emmanuel Macron called him a protector of the vulnerable, while former U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama honored his moral leadership and humility. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted his legacy on climate action and global justice.

From Latin America to Europe, Asia, and Africa, tributes poured in. Leaders like Brazil’s Lula da Silva, Canada’s Mark Carney, India’s Narendra Modi, and South Korea’s Han Duck-soo praised his humility, ethical convictions, and efforts to uplift the poor. Ukraine’s Zelenskiy and Russia’s Putin both acknowledged his efforts toward peace.

Pope Francis also left a mark on interfaith dialogue, with Muslim leaders including Turkey’s President Erdogan and Egypt’s President Sisi recognizing his stance on Palestine and global unity. Leaders from Israel and Palestine alike praised his prayers for peace and recognition of their struggles.

Criticism also surfaced, notably from Anne Barrett Doyle of Bishop Accountability, who cited Pope Francis’ failure to address clergy sexual abuse more forcefully.

Known as the “People’s Pope,” Francis’ influence extended far beyond the Church. His teachings on equity, sustainability, and human dignity leave a powerful legacy that continues to inspire billions. His passing marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church and global humanitarian leadership.
