U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Israel to stop its bombing campaign in Gaza after Hamas signaled willingness to release hostages and consider parts of Washington’s peace plan. Despite ongoing Israeli strikes that killed civilians Saturday, international reactions highlighted cautious optimism about a possible ceasefire.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called Hamas’ statement “encouraging” and stressed that an immediate ceasefire and hostage release are “within reach.” French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this, urging swift action and thanking Trump for his peace efforts. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized urgency, saying hostages must be freed and Hamas must disarm, calling this the best chance for peace in nearly two years.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Hamas’ acceptance of the U.S. plan as a “significant step forward,” backing Trump’s mediation. Spain’s Foreign Minister José Luis Albares supported an immediate ceasefire and aid entry but insisted Hamas must disarm and called for a viable Palestinian state. Ireland’s Simon Harris urged an end to “unconscionable human suffering” through a halt in bombing and a surge of humanitarian aid.
Outside Europe, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Trump’s leadership, calling hostage release a “significant step forward.” Jordan praised Hamas’ response as an important step, commending mediation by Egypt and Qatar, while urging a two-state solution. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted Hamas’ pledge to release all hostages, living and deceased, urging swift implementation.
Australia’s Anthony Albanese expressed support for Trump’s plan and reaffirmed commitment to a two-state solution. The Netherlands’ Prime Minister Dick Schoof described Hamas’ willingness to negotiate as “important steps toward a ceasefire,” stressing that an end to the war is near.
As calls for de-escalation intensify, the world watches whether Hamas’ pledge and Trump’s intervention can finally bring a long-sought breakthrough for peace in Gaza.
