Hyundai’s groundbreaking $7.6 billion Georgia Metaplant is now in action, rolling out the highly anticipated 2025 IONIQ 5, which boasts Tesla charging access and eligibility for massive federal tax credits. The plant is expected to supercharge local job creation and EV production in the U.S.
Hyundai's $7.6B Metaplant Opens with IONIQ 5 Production
Hyundai Motor Group's Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Bryan County, GA, is currently open for business following the groundbreaking in October 2022.
In an effort to gain an advantage over electric vehicles built in the United States, Hyundai accelerated production and finished construction in little under two years.
Tesla Charging Comes to Hyundai's IONIQ 5
"After validating its production processes to ensure its vehicles meet Hyundai Motor Group’s high standards, (the Savannah plant) has started initial production of customer vehicles ahead of schedule," stated Hyundai in a statement shared by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
As the biggest economic development initiative in Georgia's history, the new plant marks a significant milestone for both Hyundai and the state, according to Electrek.
Massive Federal Tax Credit for U.S.-Made EVs
The facility's initial investment of $5 billion was later increased to a staggering $7.6 billion by Hyundai. As part of its massive US network expansion, Hyundai just added its 18th supplier to the factory last week. Just Hyundai is boosting local employment by 8,500.
Bartow County is currently hosting the building of an additional 3,500 jobs as a result of a $5 billion electric vehicle battery plant that is being developed in conjunction with SK On.
Hyundai’s EV Investment to Top $12.6B in Georgia
The construction of electric vehicles, batteries, and other renewable energy projects in Georgia has received approximately $28 billion in investment since 2018. More than 36,000 new employment have been created in the state as a result of these programs.
Center for Automotive Research research indicates that more than 58,200 new employment will be generated by Hyundai's electric vehicle manufacturing in Georgia. More than $12.6 billion will be invested in it as well.
First IONIQ 5s Roll Off the Line
To train the next generation of car mechanics, the state collaborated with regional educational institutions and technical programs.
Updated IONIQ 5s for 2025 are the first vehicles to leave Hyundai's assembly line. A more powerful engine and a sleeker exterior characterize the updated Hyundai IONIQ 5. A NACS charging port allows you to connect to Tesla's extensive network of Superchargers. By the year's end of 2024, according to Hyundai, it will be on sale.
Hyundai Set to Launch IONIQ 9 SUV from Georgia
After being seen testing in the US not long ago, Hyundai will introduce the IONIQ 9, its first three-row SUV, later this year. Both the 2025 IONIQ 5 and the bigger electric SUV will be manufactured in Georgia.
The electric vehicles manufactured at the facility will be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $3,750, according to Hyundai. Hyundai anticipates that US-made EVs will be qualified for the entire $7,500 once the battery factory starts.
