The initial reactions of customers who have tried Burger King’s new Whopper Melts were not flattering, with many complaining about its size, sweetness, and type of cheese and bread.
The three new Whopper Melts are essentially patty melts that use two Whopper Jr. patties but replaced the burger bun for two toasted slices of bread.
The sandwiches are layered with melted American cheese and caramelized onions, with some variants containing jalapeños or bacon.
Many felt the item's name has misled them to believe that what they'd be getting would be the same size as the Whopper.
Burger King does advertise the melts as "one-handed" sandwiches, which many later realized is code for small.
But the fast-food chain also stacked the Whopper Melts with two Whopper Jr. patties which amount to about the amount of meat as a regular Whopper.
Still, some customers felt the ploy get paying more for less.
Meanwhile, some are complaining that the Whopper Melts have little resemblance to classic patty melts, which are made with Swiss cheese and rye bread.
Tim Carman, who reviewed the sandwiches for The Washington Post, called them "patty melt pretenders" and pointed out that other than having the wrong cheese and bread, the flavor was off and the sandwiches were all too sweet.
While the caramelized onions usually provide the slight sweetness in a classic patty melt, Carman noted that Burger King's new bread had an overwhelming sweetness similar to that of a steamed bao bun.
He said that sweetness, surprisingly, is the flavor that lingers in the Whopper |melts.
Another issue with the bread is that it didn't come out as toasted as the chain's original ads showed, while others also pointed out the rather anemic slices.
